Come be part of a tradition of excellence as a member of the Valencia “Pride of the Vikings” Marching Band! Throughout the season students will make new friends, learn leadership skills, grow as musicians and performers, earn PE credit, and compete with other schools across Southern California.
Joining band is an easy way to make new friends because we spend so much time together practicing, performing and competing. For incoming freshmen, summer band camp helps you get a jump on high school with a new circle of friends!
Band offers you a chance to be part of a team and compete! In the fall, we travel around Southern California to perform with other high school bands in weekend field show competitions. We consistently make it to championships and rank as one of the best bands in our division.
In past years, we have performed at Carnegie Hall, marched in New York City’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade, and played in a Disneyland parade. We have another East Coast trip planned for Fall 2022!
Band members get plenty of exercise. That means you earn P.E. credit during the fall semester, so you do not have to enroll in PE in the fall.
The majority of band students maintain a GPA over 3.5, and one in three has a 4.0 or higher. Recent VHS band alumni have gone on to UCLA, UCSB, and the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Band is an excellent extracurricular for your college application, with many opportunities to demonstrate leadership and a range of musical options to develop your talent. You can also earn a letter, cords for graduation, and awards that look great on college applications.

When the school year starts, you will have daily morning practices that run from approximately 7-9 AM (the first two school periods). There are also four-hour practices on Tuesday nights and Saturday mornings. Saturday practices are suspended once competition season starts in October.
The band participates in all home football games, playing pep tunes and performing the field show at halftime. Some members may also perform at rallies and other school functions.
In October, competition season begins. The band travels to various weekend competitions at high schools around Southern California. Bus transportation is provided for band members. Sometimes the band travels out of town! In past seasons, we have performed in Las Vegas, at Disneyland, Carnegie Hall in New York, and the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in New York.
The culmination of the fall marching season is the Southern California School Band and Orchestra Association Championships, where the best high school bands compete for the championship in their divisions. Our band has consistently made the championships.
The fall season comes to a close with our winter concert and awards in December.
Concert Band and Drumline
In the spring season, band members transition to concert band, where they focus on chamber music and further developing their musical skills. Percussion students transition to winter drumline, which is optional. If they do not want want to participate in winter drumline, they remain in concert band.
Spring Concert and Awards
At the end of the season, we perform a spring concert and have an awards banquet.
