VHS Jazz Mission Statement:
The Valencia High Jazz Program is dedicated to providing a safe and encouraging environment for musicians to build their musical skills culminating in performances of authentic and entertaining jazz concerts. Students are often challenged and encouraged to think critically to overcome musical hurdles through collaboration, hard work, and determination. Through this process, students will develop pride, self-confidence, and discipline that can be applied to all aspects of life. Our band room is a friendly, all-inclusive space free of judgement where all members are encouraged to be their authentic selves. Through jazz we hope to inspire empowerment, excellence, and community.

Hello students and parents,
Our award winning Valencia High Jazz Program is currently accepting students! Our Jazz Program works directly under the umbrella of our Band and Color Guard Program and are supported with help from your generous donations through the Valencia High Band and Color Guard Booster Organization.
Our Jazz Band consists of 18-24 members with an instrumentation as follows:
2-3 alto saxophonists
2-3 tenor saxophonists
1-2 baritone saxophonists
1-2 bass trombonists/tuba players
There is no jazz experience necessary to join!* The class is an 8th period class that students can enroll in for class credit if they are interested. It meets Mondays 3:30pm-5pm and Wednesdays 3:15pm-5pm and starts the first day of each semester.
In Jazz Band you will:
- Play in a variety of styles including swing, bossa nova, samba, afro-cuban and funk
- Sight read on a regular basis
- Learn the basics of improvisation and how to express yourself through your instrument
- Play in a section on individual parts (very rarely do you play the same part as someone else!)
- Perform off campus at a variety of venues including family restaurants and theaters
- Partake in masterclasses and performances with collegiate jazz groups and professional jazz musicians

*Because the instrumentation of a jazz band is somewhat limited there will be a vetting process if there are too many students interested in any specific positions. This decision is made at the discretion of the director. The factors that will be weighed during the decision making process are seniority in the jazz band, experience playing jazz, and a short audition if absolutely necessary.
